A Night by the Shirakawa, Embraced by the Breath of Spring

The third property in the HITOTOSE series, HITOTOSE Haru – Kyoto Gion Shirakawa is a private machiya-style retreat nestled along the Shirakawa River, offering an intimate stay surrounded by the quiet beauty of the changing seasons.
Beyond the entrance, plasterwork, washi paper, and a traditional coffered ceiling quietly welcome you.
On the first floor is “Shitamoé,” a room inspired by the first young shoots that quietly emerge from beneath the withered grasses of the previous year. These delicate signs of new life are captured in a cut-paper artwork by artist Keiko Hagiwara, bringing the subtle arrival of spring to the walls.
On the second floor, “Oborozuki” reflects the softly veiled moon of a spring night. The moonlight is expressed through the mirror-like plasterwork of plaster artisan Arato Saito, complemented by sculptural forms created with washi paper.
On the third floor, the living room opens onto the Shirakawa through a large picture window, framing the changing expressions of the seasons alongside the gentle sound of flowing water. Sit by the window and let the view quietly unfold before you, as time seems to slow.
The cherry blossoms in full bloom will, in time, give way to fresh green leaves.
Each subtle sign of the season is quietly woven into every corner of the house, while HITOTOSE Haru – Kyoto Gion Shirakawa simply remains there, embracing the passing of time.
